Toshiba Thrive 7-Inch Review and Product Description

Little Review

  • The good: The Toshiba Thrive 7-inch has a Mini-HDMI port and a very responsive screen, and includes a built-in file manager.
  • The bad: Unlike the 10-inch version, there's no support for full ports or a swappable battery. Also, the camera placement is ill-conceived, the shutter speed is painfully slow, and the tablet is expensive, given what it offers.
  • The bottom line: The Toshiba Thrive 7-inch is a decent tablet, but there are simply better options out there for the price.

GOOD PRODUCT !! September 25, 2013

I only review electronic products once I've road tested them thoroughly. I've had this tablet about a year now and am pleased with the purchase. I needed a small 7" screen for small four year old hands to borrow when they wanted electronic distraction; and to date it hasn't been dropped. The size wouldn't be great for me alone, as I am too used to the 10" sizes, but it works well for the travelling we do.

Considering its small size the sound that it generates is good quality and we watch many movies on the pre-installed software. We used a mico SD care to expand the storage and found it to be the best option. The main drawback I found is that the charging cable seems poorly designed for small unit. We also have a 10" ASUS and an Ipad, both of which are larger with small charging connections. For some reason Toshiba made this one with a large, fragile connection. It means that if you use the tablet while charging it, the cable disconnects, or in our case, starts to twist and break. One of the prongs became bent which then made it easier to fall out when charging. This may, or may not have led to our next issue.

10 months in the tablet suddenly turned off when charging. It hadn't been turned on for about 2 weeks prior to this. It was plugged in, it was working fine up to the point it turned off, but it wouldn't turn back on again. I then realized that the charging light wasn't turning on either. I knew that the tablet had 60% power when it dropped, so I tried turning it on without the charging cable and then tried various power outlets. The tablet was dead. I suspected that a software update was taking place and the power cable disconnected causing an issue, but couldn't be sure. Luckily the tablet was still under warranty. The most positive part about this situation was the Toshiba customer service. They were helpful and ran though the basics while I was on the phone, although I knew it was pointless, but they have to cover the basics before moving on. They raised a job number and I used the Toshiba website to arrange for the tablet to be sent back. They do charge you a $24 charge for a box to send it back, that way they ensure that the tablet arrives in one piece and doesn't get beaten about. Although tempted not to use their box, as I still had the original box, I took this option. They send you the box with a Fedex label to return. While it can take 7-10 days, we got it back in 5 days, including the weekend. The software had been updated and they had even replaced the charging cable for us.

The tablet is still working and doing well. Overall it is a good product. When I bought it I was used to the ipad's graphics and size. You'll struggle to get a good comparison with a 7" screen, but I've found this to be a good product.
